As part of this year’s TechweekNZ, the Digital Moana Forum will be showcasing successful Pacific people who are in their own right, trail blazers in different parts of the tech sector.

Samoa’s very own Fa’aso’otauloa Sam Saili, Chief Executive Officer of SkyEye, will be the keynote speaker for the “Inspire, Inform, Empower Forum” to be held in Auckland on the 22nd May.

In line with the event’s aim, which is to open up existing opportunities in the tech sector for participants and to promote Pasifika people in the tech industry – Fa’aso’otauloa will be focusing on providing motivation, with his signature ‘can-do’ attitude.

He told Samoa Planet that he would be speaking about the struggles of having an ICT company in a physically and virtually isolated environment, as well as how to make ICT work for you, and not the other way around.

He also wants to use the opportunity to encourage Pacific Island youths to have the confidence to get into the sector, he said “(I’ll cover how to) use the limited resources we have in the islands to build a regional company and encourage our PI youths that if we can do it in the islands with very limited resources, they can do it much faster, easier and bigger.”

Drawing from the advantages of being from the Pacific Islands, Fa’aso’otauloa also said he would “highlight that being from the Pacific Islands or knowing and having knowledge of the Pacific Islands is a big advantage compared to developers that do not have that knowledge so encourage them to use that advantage.”

In offering more valuable insight into the world of tech business, Fa’aso’otauloa told Samoa Planet, “Once you set up a good business online, you are immediately a global business because you have a global audience now.
“But there is a in difference having a global audience, and delivering your service in the other countries, but the best part of being a Pacific Islander in this area (ICT), when you set up in one, it will be similar for the rest of the Pacific in terms of market demand and behaviour.”

If you’re keen to hear SkyEye’s presentation and learn from other leading Pacific people in the tech industry, be sure not to miss out on the one day Forum at the end of this month. You’ll be able to learn about programming, web development, gaming and creative technology – from some of the region’s best.
