2018 SBN Awards 'People's Choice Award' - Finalist Profile: Afa Ah Loo
Designer Afa Ah Loo has made quite a name for himself on the Samoa fashion scene.
The 32-year-old from the villages Lotopa, Falelima, Neiafu and Satupaitea has become accustomed to being asked to feature in fashion shows like the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show in Auckland and Los Angeles Fashion Week. He says his opportunities have been a blessing particularly for someone who only discovered his love of fashion at a later stage in his life and having launched his brand Afa Ah Loo just five years ago. His collections are known for the edgy and innovative touch that he adds to the typical Pacific fashion etiquette of bright colours and hibiscus flowers. “I think as an entrepreneur, it’s all about taking risks and doing everything you can to see that your vision comes true so for me, I was naturally afraid of failure but I knew that if it was something that I was passionate about, I will be okay.” His infectious smile and bubbly personality always makes his steady stream of client’s laugh. So it’s no surprise that he’s been nominated for the Samoa Business Network ‘People’s Choice’ Award. “I have a wide range of clients. From young teenagers to adults and if you ask them about me they would say I’m FABULOUS! I'm kidding,” he laughs. “But they do appreciate my designs and my vision and enjoy the process of how I design for people and how I help them with what they are looking for in a piece.” Now living in Utah with his wife Laura and their newborn daughter Vera, Afa is enjoying this new chapter of fatherhood. Like many designers, personal experiences can inspire ideas for designs and no doubt being a new dad will offer him new perspectives in both life and in fashion. “I am always looking for opportunities and ideas to grow as a designer and especially to serve my people through fashion. I couldn’t have done it without God, my family and my friends.” He encourages people who may be hesitant to start a business, especially the ‘latecomers’ to take that leap. “What are you waiting for? Do it! I wish I did! It may not be the easiest of journeys but it will be damn well worth it. If opportunities don't knock, build a door.” Pacific Runway Photo Credits: Danny Tanuvasa Main Cover Pic: Coconet TV
